Brian, I like your summaries about the reading. "You Gotta BE the Book" enclurages teachers to consider the interests of students and to incorporate those interests when assigning readings.
I agree that the interests of students will help increase interest in reading. But, we as teachers also need to make sure we are teaching them content rich materials, and not allow students to dictate all that we do just so they stay interested.
“Lack of enthusiasm”. Wilhelm attitude made his class more successful. As the teacher-researcher, he had the right attitude to reach his students. I think that beyond the students’ home life, as educators, if we don’t have the right attitude or beliefs, our students can read that and will feed off of it. I think that it is important to reach the student where they are and build from there. Not saying that we do not challenge them; instead, we help them feel comfortable at their level and not compare them to their peers to hopefully reach a higher level of reading, thinking, and connecting
The interests of students and their parents is what fuels their approach to literacy. Perfect example was this weekend we went to my sister in laws' house. My 10 year nephew spent about 8 hrs Saturday playing Call of Duty. Not one time did his mom or dad say anything about him playing that long. I hassled him the whole time. During that same time period my son who is 7, read the second, third and fourth books in the Wimpy Kid series.
I feel that getting a student interested in literacy is a sound ideas but that it comes with a limit. Students interest can have a wide variety as each students have their own interest. When a student's interest conflict with school's policy or ethical concerns teachers must tell students that proper contents for school matters is of the utmost important and that contents must be in accordance with school policies and standards. More so, schools must connect literacy throughout a students education from pre-k until 12th grade in all content areas.
Listening to your response I stated to think about how small children are so eager to read and the ones who develop and continue to read are those who were read to constantly. This book asks us to motivation children who are simply lost that spark and desire for reading.
I also agree if it is something that student are interested in they will definitely engage themselves a lot more that totally hating the class. Teacher should improvise to make sure evry student is fully aware of what there learning along with having some type of background knowledge.
